You exit the Madonna Chapel into the cemetery (area #4 on the map above). As you can see here in the panorama the grounds are extensive.

There are a number of things you can see in the cemetery if you care to wander around. The various monuments document the lives of many early and current residents of the area around the Mission. One, however, stands close to the cemetery entrance; it is a memorial that dates from around 1830 and stands in memory of the many Indians buried at the cemetery.

After looking around the cemetery start toward the exit but before you get there look up at the church. The view of the bell tower is striking from this angle.

Note, also, the small room at the base of the bell tower. Here you will find the Franciscan burial crypts and the Hannon statue of Blessed Serra. Don’t forget to rub Blessed Serra’s toe for luck!
