Navigation for San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo:

Behind the Basilica is a small adobe now set up as the Munras Museum. Barcelona-born Esteban Munras relocated from Lima, Peru to Monterey in 1820. Two years later he wed Catalina Manzaneli at Mission Soledad. The couple took up residence with her stepfather, Dr. Quixano, at the Monterey Presidio while they were building Casa Munras on a nearby 3-acre lot. That house was completed in 1824 and the family prospered.

About twelve decades later, in 1941, their great-granddaughter Maria Antonia Field built a country villa on Rancho Laguna Seca and later, in 1958, she moved into her third home overlooking the Carmel Mission.

This museum describes the life of that family.

A number of display cases line the walls of this small museum. A video showing the history of Monterey runs in a loop and seats are available to view the video. Take the time to look around and watch the video.
